Atlantic City Casino Shutdown Cost $51 MillionThe three day shutdown of the twelve casinos in the Atlantic City has cost fifty one million dollars in gambling revenues. According to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, revenues for the month of July were down by 4.8% compared to the same period last year. The close down of the casinos still allowed the Atlantic City casinos land the 2nd highest revenue total for a single month. Only the $504.77 million the casinos earned in July 2005 topped the $480.53 million. Casino Association President Joseph A. Corbo Jr from New Jersey said that their group will propose legislation to prevent another casino shutdown from occurring in the future. Forty five thousand casino employees were affected by the shutdown in South Jersey. Aside from the casino employees, the gambling revenues were badly affected. Casino revenues are 17.16 million dollars per day in the twenty eight days of July. If the casino did not close down, the gambling revenues might have generated more than five hundred thirty two million dollars, a wide difference of over fifty one million dollars. Corbo said that the figures do not include the loss of non gambling revenues at the retail stores and restaurants. The casino employees also lost nine million dollars in tips and wages. |
